1922 Peace Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1922 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1922 Peace dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. The date shows a clockwise (CW) spread. On the obverse, a crack follows the front of the bust's base, a SSW/NNE scratch lies right of the date's second 2, and a small gouge (dot) sits left of the bottom of that 2. The reverse is the doubled die 1922 WDDR-003, with a strong spread to the east on ONE, the DO of DOLLAR, the talons, the olive branch and its leaves, and the back feathers of the lower legs. The rays left of the legs, the rays through ONE and the rays through DO are doubled too. Gary Wagnon submitted the variety. Its VAM number is #3. Wexler notes that the specimen it studied showed mechanical doubling along the left side of the date's digits; this should not be confused with the doubled die's doubling, which is clearest on the lower right of the digits.
