Error
Description
Discovered in 2017 by Bob Folkers, the 1922 Peace Dollar VAM-1AH is identified by a short vertical die gouge at the rim well below the right side of the G in GOD on the obverse (die II1), caused by feed fingers contacting the die surface. Paired with reverse die B1a, this variety carries an I-2 interest level and R-5 rarity rating. Feed finger gouges occur when the mechanical fingers that guide planchets into the striking chamber contact the die face, gouging the softer die steel and creating marks that transfer to every subsequent coin struck from that die. These gouges appear as raised features on the finished coin, and their position relative to the design elements provides reliable diagnostic markers. The 1922 Philadelphia Peace Dollar, with the highest mintage in the entire series at over 51 million pieces, is paradoxically home to some of the rarest individual VAM varieties, and collectors working through this prolific date should examine the area below GOD for the vertical mark that defines VAM-1AH.
