Description

Discovered by David Close in 2017, the 1922 Peace Dollar VAM-1AD features a radial die crack on the reverse (die B1a) running from the rim down between the C and A of AMERICA, with a slight displaced field break developing at the top left of the M. Paired with obverse die II1 and carrying an I-2 interest level with R-6 rarity — indicating approximately 13 to 30 known specimens — this variety documents a progressive die failure where a crack extending from the rim has begun to widen into a displaced break near the letter M. Displaced field breaks represent the transitional stage between a simple die crack and a full cud, where the crack widens enough at certain points to allow planchet metal to flow into the gap, creating a raised area on struck coins. The specific path between CA of AMERICA, with the break developing near M, traces a clear route through the reverse inscription that serves as the primary diagnostic.
