Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1922 $1 WDDO-002, this Peace Dollar is a combination variety — the reverse die is also a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1922 $1 WDDR-004. Obverse doubling shows on the date, the designer's initials (AF for Anthony de Francisci), and TRUST, while the reverse doubling manifests on the olive branch and leaves, the eagle's talons, the back feathers on the lower legs, the rays to the left of the legs, and the rays running through and above ONE. A small die gouge (dot) can be found above and between the third and fourth rays from the right on the reverse, serving as a precise diagnostic marker. No significant obverse die markers are noted beyond the doubling itself. The convergence of obverse and reverse hub doubling on the same die pair — each occurring during independent hubbing events for their respective dies — creates a combination DDO/DDR variety that is particularly prized by Peace Dollar specialists because both sides of the coin carry variety interest. The Peace Dollar was designed by Anthony de Francisci and struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1922, composed of 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter. The 1922-P had an enormous mintage of approximately 51.7 million pieces — the highest in the entire Peace Dollar series — making it an accessible date where dedicated searching can yield variety specimens. The reverse doubling on the olive branch, talons, and ray elements documents a hub displacement that affected the lower portion of the reverse die most strongly, suggesting the hub offset was concentrated in the direction of the eagle's base and surrounding design elements.
