Description
Designated Retained Die Break Below Y and attributed by David Close with revisions in 2012, this 1922 Denver Mint Peace Dollar is classified as II 1 B2a. The primary feature is a die crack running from Liberty's hair bun downward through the lower stem of Y in LIBERTY, where it splits into two separate cracks continuing to the rim with a displaced field break. Additionally, the die exhibits very slight doubling on the nostril, top lip, and the designer's initials of Anthony de Francisci. The retained die break indicates the die fractured significantly but the broken section remained in place rather than separating to form a full cud, producing a crack line rather than a raised featureless mass. The 1922-D is the most common Peace Dollar date by a substantial margin, with mintage exceeding 15 million, providing collectors a large population to search for this variety.
