1922 (D) Peace Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1922-D WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1922-D Peace dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Strong doubling, spread to the north, is seen on TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, the lower edge of the bust and the hair at the lower back of the head. On the obverse, a small gouge lies left of the upper lip, scratches run WNW from the lower front of the bust, and WSW/ENE scratches sit above the 22 of the date. The reverse is the doubled die Wexler lists as 1922-D WDDR-001. It is lightly doubled on the olive leaves and branches, the back leg feathers, the bottom of DOLL in DOLLAR, and the rays above and below ONE and left of the legs. A heavy gouge runs from STATES's first S through the T to the A, and a light scratch runs from under the mint mark to the feathers. Joe Feld submitted the variety. Its VAM number is #4. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
