Error
Description
Discovered by Jeff Oxman in October 2002, the 1922-D VAM-1G is designated "Rim Die Chip Below N" for a small triangular die chip at the rim directly below the N of IN on the obverse. The VAM plate notation reads 1G II 1 B1a. Beyond the primary chip, circular die cracks extend from the chip area to the top of the numeral 1 in the date and continue to the neck, with another crack running upward through the N of IN. This network of interconnected cracks and the triangular chip indicate a die in advanced fatigue, with multiple fracture paths across the obverse face. The 1922-D Peace Dollar is one of the highest-mintage issues in the series, with Denver producing over 15 million examples, yet identifying a confirmed VAM-1G requires locating the specific combination of triangular rim chip and associated crack network. Oxman's 2002 documentation added this variety to the Peace Dollar VAM catalog, which continues to expand as researchers examine this series with increasing thoroughness.
