Description

Discovered in 2017 by David Close, this 1922-D Peace Dollar is cataloged as VAM-1AK under the classification II1 - B2a. The variety is defined by prominent die breaks below the IN and Y of IN GOD WE TRUST. A die break extends from Liberty's neck over to the letters IN, accompanied by a displaced field break where metal has been pushed outward from the die surface. A second die crack descends from the Y in LIBERTY down to the S in TRUST, also showing a slight displaced field break. Displaced field breaks indicate advanced die deterioration, where cracked sections of the die shift enough to displace the surrounding field area on struck coins, creating raised irregular ridges. The 1922-D Peace Dollar is one of the most common dates in the series with a mintage exceeding 15 million, yet advanced die-failure varieties like VAM-1AK are considerably scarcer since they represent coins struck during the final stages of a die's service life. Close's 2017 discovery of this variety demonstrates that new VAM attributions continue to emerge even for heavily studied dates in the Peace Dollar series.
