Description

Peace Dollars carry on their reverse the motto TRVST — a deliberate archaic spelling using the classical Latin V in place of U — and their 90% silver composition links them to the Morgan Dollar series they succeeded in 1921. The 1922-D VAM-1AC was discovered by Peaceman in March 2010 and is designated Pitted Face, Die Scratches TR, cataloged under the II1 B1a die pairing. Raised dots and splotches appear on Liberty's head, face, the date, and the TRVST area — the result of rust or extreme die wear transferring as raised metal spots on struck coins. This pitting is differentiated from similar pitting on VAMs 1T, 1V, and 1Z, making the precise raised-dot pattern a critical attribution tool. Die markers include diagonal die file lines through GOD WE and long X-pattern die scratches below and above the TR of TRVST. A large obverse cud from approximately 6:00 to 10:00 on the rim is also noted — a significant die break requiring further die-state research. The 1922-D Peace Dollar was struck at Denver in large quantities, the primary mint for this date.
