1922 (D) Peace Dollar - VAM-11

Description

Discovered by David Close, the 1922-D VAM-11 Peace Dollar is cataloged as 11 (revised) II 1 - B2g (Doubled Olive Branch, Leaves and Top of Wing), rated I-3 R-4 on the rarity scale. The Peace Dollar, designed by Anthony de Francisci, was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver at 26.73 grams and 38.1 mm diameter. The reverse (B2g) exhibits extensive doubling across multiple design elements: the olive branch and middle leaves are doubled on their lower edges, the D of DOLLAR is slightly doubled at the base, the eagle's right shoulder is slightly doubled on its right side, and there is doubling on the bottom of the right talon, the back of the leg feathers, and three rays below and four above the word ONE. This multi-element doubling pattern affecting the branch, lettering, eagle anatomy, and rays indicates a significant hub displacement during die manufacture. The I-3 interest rating and R-4 rarity rating (estimated 31 to 100 known) place this as a moderately scarce variety with good collector appeal. The 1922-D had a substantial mintage of 15,063,000, making the base date readily available while the specific VAM-11 die pair remains elusive among those millions of coins.
