1922-D VAM-1M

Description

Discovered by David Close, the 1922-D Peace Dollar VAM-1M features a retained cud below the numeral 1 in the date on the obverse (die II 1), paired with reverse die B1a. A die break extends from the rim to the right through the base of the 1 and back down to the rim at the right of the 1, creating a bridge-like retained break that encompasses the lower portion of the first date digit. Cataloged with an I-2 interest level and R-6 rarity rating — indicating an estimated 13 to 30 known examples — this variety represents one of the more dramatic die break entries among Denver Mint Peace Dollars. The retained nature of the break means the die fragment remained in position during striking, preserving some original design detail within the break zone while transferring the crack outline as raised lines. The 1922-D, struck at the Denver Mint with a mintage of 15,063,000, is a readily available date in the Peace Dollar series, but VAM-1M's R-6 rarity makes it a challenging find.
