Description

Discovered in 2017 by the collector known as CascadeChris Simpson, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-1BF2 under classification V1 with a D2a reverse, titled Scribbling Die Scratches, Die Breaks Obverse and Reverse, carrying a rarity rating of 189. The obverse shows a die crack running from rim to rim above the E with a displaced field break, documenting significant die stress. The reverse D2a die exhibits die cracks above the legend with displaced field breaks above ITE, F, ERI, and DOL, while scribbles at the eagle's right leg have been mostly worn away from die polishing or continued use. Because 1921 dates were part of the master die, no variation in date position exists across the issue. The 1921 Morgan dollar was the final year of production before the Peace dollar replaced it, and Philadelphia struck over 44 million pieces that year, generating extensive die usage that produced numerous breakdown varieties like this one.
