Description

Cataloged as Scribbling Die Scratches #74 and discovered by Roger Beckner in October 2019, the 1921-D Morgan Dollar VAM-1AM2 is a late die state variety defined by an accumulation of die cracks and displaced field breaks across both obverse and reverse. The obverse shows die cracks at the 5th and 6th right stars and at the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM, with displaced field breaks adjacent to those cracks — a sign of a die under significant internal stress approaching the end of its service life. The reverse mirrors this deterioration with die cracks at the F in OF AMERICA and through the ED of UNITED, again accompanied by displaced field breaks at both locations. In 1921, the Morgan Dollar series was resumed after a sixteen-year hiatus, and dates were incorporated into the master die rather than punched individually, eliminating date-position variation between pairs. The Denver Mint was one of three mints striking 1921 Morgans.
