DPIS – In 1921 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # Earliest die stages will not have the gouge at the E, rather only the scribbling scratches # In the VAM-1AA1, a diagonal die gouge runs from the denticles up through lower left serif of the E in ONE. Note that 1921-D VAM-1AA2 has a die break enlarging the 3rd left obverse star. # In December 2004, Jack Lee discovered VAM-1AG had the VAM-1AA die gouge on the reverse. VAM-1AA1 is actually an early die state of the old VAM-1AG. VAM-1AA became 1AA1 and VAM-1AG became VAM-1AA2. # There are three other known dies with gouges through the E in ONE. Be sure to also check the 1921-D VAM-1U , 1921-D VAM-1AK and 1921-D VAM-1AL to ensure you have the correct attribution. VAM-1U runs up and right, while VAM-1AA runs up and left. The VAM-1AK die gouge is more vertical than this VAM and VAM-1AK crosses through both the N and the E of ONE.
