Description

Struck at San Francisco during the first full year of post-World War I production, PC-1c-1919S-02R is a pre-cud variety on the Lincoln Wheat Cent cataloged by Cuds on Coins. The 1919-S issue emerged as the nation transitioned from wartime footing to peacetime coinage operations. A pre-cud documents the critical stage of die failure where a significant crack has formed but the weakened section has not yet separated to produce a cud or retained cud. The raised line visible on struck coins traces the subsurface fracture where planchet metal has been extruded into the die's fissure under the enormous pressures of the coining process. As only the second pre-cud recorded for the 1919-S date, this variety suggests that die failures of this magnitude were relatively uncommon for San Francisco's cent production during this period. The cent was produced in the standard 95% copper, 5% tin-zinc bronze composition in continuous use since 1909. For collectors specializing in early Lincoln Wheat Cent die varieties, pre-cuds from the late 1910s represent a less frequently encountered segment of the catalog.
