1919 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - CU-1C-1919S-17R Rim Cud
Error
Description
CU-1C-1919S-17R is a rim cud on the reverse of the 1919 San Francisco Wheat cent, positioned just clockwise of 12:00. It runs along the rim from about the end of PLURIBUS to the first U of UNUM. A rim cud forms when the die loses part of its rim gutter; on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the rim that tracks the rim's course, and its position relative to the lettering is the main diagnostic for matching a coin to a specific failed die. Cuds on Coins added this die on January 4, 2026 and notes a die chip in the S mint mark as a second marker. Several other documented 1919-S reverse rim cuds sit near the top of the coin (CU-1C-1919S-04R and 05R, 13R, 15R, 19R and the 07R group), so the exact span of the break is what separates them. The 1919-S has one of the longest records of rim failures of any Lincoln cent, with twenty numbered rim cuds on Cuds on Coins across its 139,760,000-piece mintage.
