1919 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Displaying a light spread directed north on one eye of the Indian Head portrait, this 1919 Buffalo Nickel doubled die obverse presents subtle hub doubling requiring magnification to confirm. The northward spread indicates the secondary hub impression shifted slightly upward relative to the primary design, concentrating visible doubling in the delicate detail of the eye. DDO-003 is cataloged by VarietyVista with die marker references UVC-240 and DMR-004. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B in Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed), tracking die wear from fresh to fatigued. The unconfirmed status of Stages A and C indicates specimens from those states are either extremely scarce or not yet verified to catalog standards. James Earle Fraser's iconic Indian Head and Bison design, produced from 1913 through 1938, is among the most celebrated in American numismatics, and doubled die varieties on this type are actively sought. The 1919 Philadelphia Mint issue belongs to the middle period of the series. The light nature of the spread means careful examination under magnification is essential for attribution.
