1919 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista with attribution codes UVC-239 and DMR-003, this 1919 Buffalo Nickel doubled die obverse displays hub doubling on the profile, eye, ear, and LIBERTY inscription on the obverse. James Earle Fraser's iconic Buffalo Nickel design features a composite Native American portrait on the obverse, and doubling across multiple facial features provides strong visual diagnostics for attribution. A die chip on the eyebrow appears at the late die state, adding a secondary marker that helps identify the specific die stage. The 1919 Philadelphia Mint Buffalo Nickel was struck in the standard copper-nickel composition, and as the second cataloged doubled die obverse for the date, DDO-002 represents ongoing variety research on this classic early twentieth-century design. Buffalo Nickels have always attracted variety collectors due to their bold, high-relief design elements that make doubling relatively easy to detect. The profile and eye doubling on this variety would be visible under moderate magnification, while the LIBERTY doubling in the recessed lettering along the rim may require closer examination. Fraser's design was in its seventh year of production by 1919.
