1917 Buffalo Nickel - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1917 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1917 Buffalo nickel, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes a Class IV spread on the bison's eyelid. On the obverse, in the space from the Indian's short feather to the rim lies a series of die scratches. On the reverse, a small die gouge (dot) sits under the center of the M in AMERICA; a wavy gouge lies behind the bison's left front leg; finally, an S-shaped gouge and a long scratch sit under the bison's tail. Wayne Carson submitted the variety, and Wexler's comments note that the photos were taken by Brian Ribar. Wexler lists no cross-references.
