1917 Buffalo Nickel - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002 / DDR-002

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-802, this 1917 Buffalo nickel DDR-002, which Wexler numbers WDDR-002, is a doubled die reverse with medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Wexler's entry gives the cross-reference as FS-05-1916-802. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and follows the die through two stages. At obverse stage A, clash marks lie under the chin. By obverse stage B a NW/SE die crack crosses the hair at the head's front and reaches the rim to the northwest, another crack crosses the top feather, heavy feeder finger damage sits close to the rim above the top of the head, and a die gouge lies below the second and third feathers. The reverse shows nothing at stage A; at stage B die deterioration emphasizes the clash remnants through E PLURIBUS UNUM, and large flow lines appear to the right of the S in CENTS. Stage A was submitted by Kevin Flynn and stage B by Keith Christenson; Kevin Flynn also took the stage A photos. CONECA lists the die as 2-R-IV. VarietyVista credits Don Lommler with the report. Under its marker codes UVC-033 and DMR-003 it lists an early stage A, a middle stage B and a late stage C, none yet confirmed.
