1916 Buffalo Nickel - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

Classified as Class V doubling with a clockwise spread pivoting near 2:00, WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1916 Buffalo nickel, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-001. Both list it as FS-101 (Wexler writes it FS-05-1916-101 (016)). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls the spread very strong. It appears on the date and the ribbon ties, at the feather tips and the braid, and across the neck, nose, lips and chin. No die markers are noted for either side. J. T. Stanton submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 1-O-V. VarietyVista, with the reporter unknown, describes a very strong spread on the date, chin and throat, the feathers, and the tie on the braids. It tracks the die under its marker codes UVC-028 and DMR-003 through an early stage A, a middle stage B and a late stage C, none of them confirmed yet.
