1916 Buffalo Nickel - Typical Die Clash TDC-5C-1916-01

Description

TDC-5c-1916-01 is a typical die clash on a 1916 Buffalo nickel, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. It goes by the names "extra feathers" and "two and a half feather" variety, after a clash mark to the right of the real feathers; that mark came from the detail in the buffalo's neck, and the outline of the neck left a mark too. The marks are on both dies and were not abraded, and the dies were offset by roughly 10% when they met. The back of the buffalo's left hind leg also left a mark, and on the reverse the Indian's lower jaw line and neck left one beneath PLURIBUS UNUM. No matching marks show on the obverse die in that area, which MDC suggests may be because the die was in a very late state (VLDS). Heavy flow lines from die wear cover both dies.
