Description
Bearing die markers UVC-072 and DMR-002, this first documented repunched mintmark for the 1916 Denver Mint Mercury Dime shows a D over D displacement in the north direction — the second D punch impression landing slightly above the first. The researcher's note requesting specimens for new digital photographs and die state study indicates this variety has not been fully documented with modern imaging technology, leaving room for additional die state analysis. Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design — popularly called the Mercury Dime — debuted in 1916 as part of the design renaissance championed by President Theodore Roosevelt. A repunched mintmark on the key-date 1916-D adds a layer of die variety significance to an already legendary coin, making RPM-001 particularly noteworthy for specialists who collect at the intersection of key dates and die varieties.
