Description

Marking the inaugural year of James Earle Fraser's Type 2 Buffalo Nickel design with the bison standing on a flat, recessed plain, this 1913 doubled die reverse represents the earliest cataloged DDR in the series. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-II+VI and Cherrypickers FS-05-1913-801 (014.86), the variety combines Class II and Class VI hub doubling on the reverse, a relatively uncommon pairing of doubling classes on a single die. The Type 2 design, introduced partway through 1913 to address rapid date wear on the raised-mound Type 1, would remain in production through 1938. Buffalo Nickels were struck in a 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy throughout the series. As the first year of Type 2 production, 1913 examples attract particular attention from variety collectors seeking early die anomalies in the redesigned reverse.
