1913-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1913-D 5-cent WRPM-001, this repunched mintmark on the 1913-D Buffalo Nickel Type 2 displays D/D Northwest — the mintmark punched over a previous D positioned to the northwest. James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel debuted in 1913 with two reverse types: Type 1 with the bison on a raised mound, and Type 2 — this variety's host — with the bison on a recessed flat field adopted mid-year to improve die life. Mintmarks in this era were applied individually by hand using a steel punch and mallet, and any misalignment between strikes left traces of the first impression. On the Type 2 reverse, the D sits beneath FIVE CENTS on the flat field, where the recessed background makes the repunching easier to detect than on the raised-mound Type 1 version. No other cross-references are known beyond the Wexler designation.
