Description

This 1794 Liberty Cap Right Half Cent presents a textbook example of what happens when obverse and reverse dies strike one another without a planchet between them. Each die receives an incuse impression of the opposing design, and every subsequent coin struck from those dies carries a faint ghost of that opposite face. On this piece, an impression of the reverse wreath is legible in front of Liberty's face on the obverse, while elements of Liberty's cap and hair appear around the left side of the wreath on the reverse. The "Second Example" designation indicates a distinct die pair or separately documented specimen within this issue. The 1794 Liberty Cap Right Half Cent holds special significance as the first year of the redesigned series with Liberty facing right, struck in copper at the fledgling Philadelphia Mint. Die clashes on early American copper are evidence of the hand-operated production methods of the era, when die alignment and press control were far less precise than in later mechanized coinage.
