Description

1904-P VAM-4 Doubled 9-4, Spiked 1, Doubled Reverse Lettering Discovered by William Shulz, April 1978. Revised 2012. '''4 (revised) III2 4 C4d (Doubled 9-4, Spiked 1, Doubled Reverse Lettering) (181)''' '''Obverse III2 4 -''' Doubled 9-4 in date. 1 has a spike of metal projecting up from right side of base. Doubled 9 at bottom outside of both loops, and 4 at left bottom of crossbar. Liberty head profile slightly doubled from forehead down to jaw. Thin thread-like die impression above cap ribbon. '''Reverse C4d -''' Hub doubling of UNITED STAT AM and upper left and right wreath leaves towards rim. In God We and top of eagle's head slightly doubled. ''Hub Marker -'' Slightly tripled lower serif of N in United. ''Die Marker'' - Couple diagonal polishing lines in neck-wing gap. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: '''Comments: # Leroy had stated that this is the same hub defect (spiked 1) as the [[1904-S VAM-10. This "spiked" 1 in the date is a flaw in the date digit punch or logotype, and was not in the hub. He has revised his thinking based on different date placements of the 04-O V4,4A,4B; 04-P V3,V3A,V4,V10, 04-S V10,V12 and V13. Note that the "spiked" 1 only occurs in 1904 at all three mints.
