Description
=1900-S VAM-9 Near Date, S/S Serifs= Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, January 1980. 9 III2 2 - C3f (Near Date, S/S Serifs) (187) Obverse III2 2 - Seventh left star has two short spikes. Date set further left than normal. Reverse C3f - Narrow S mint mark IV S doubled on lower right of top serif and bottom left of lower serif. Mint mark set high and centered. Comments: # Later die stages will show a vertical break through Liberty's nose into the field, with a chip just below the nose, as well as a crack through the top of the cap on the obverse. On the reverse, there is a thick crack through the O in ONE, left star, and U in UNITED, with a chip on the crack near the U. A sufficiently late die stage showing field displacement or a large enough break would be a candidate for listing as 1900-S VAM-9A but such a listing hasn't been made yet.
