Error
Description
Discovered by Martin Field in October 1981, the 1900-S VAM-11 Morgan Dollar bears classification 11 III2 6 - C3b and is identified as the Doubled 190 variety. The obverse die III2 6 shows the 1 doubled below the upper crossbar, the 9 doubled at the top inside of the upper loop, and the first 0 doubled at the top outside, with the date set further left than normal compared to other 1900-S die pairings. The reverse die C3b is a normal die carrying a wide V-shaped S mint mark. Emission sequence research indicates this reverse die was also paired with the VAM-2 obverse, providing collectors with a die lineage connection between the two varieties. The leftward date position serves as a useful preliminary diagnostic before confirming the doubled digits under magnification. San Francisco struck 3.54 million Morgan Dollars in 1900, and the combination of three doubled date digits with the distinctive leftward placement makes VAM-11 one of the more identifiable doubled-date varieties for this mint and year.
