1900-S VAM-30A

Description

Discovered in 2020 by Dirtdoctor, the 1900-S VAM-30A Morgan Dollar is classified III2 13 with a C3b reverse. The obverse features a low slanted date combined with an extensive network of displaced field breaks. A die crack runs through all date digits, with another extending from the right side of the 9's lower loop to the denticles, producing a displaced field break below 19. A light horizontal crack on the left side of the neck point continues to the second right star with a slight displaced field break. The most dramatic failure: a strong crack from denticles at the right side of the second left star continuing through all remaining stars, with displaced field breaks between the 2nd through 5th left stars. Displaced field breaks occur when a crack widens enough for the separated die section to shift under striking pressure, creating a visible step in the surface. The concentration of these breaks across date, stars, and neck areas indicates a die in advanced failure near the end of its useful life. San Francisco's 3,540,000 Morgan Dollar output in 1900 makes late-die-state varieties uncommon.
