1900-S VAM-13

Description

First discovered by Leroy Van Allen in December 1981 and revised by PacificWR in 2018, the 1900-S Morgan Dollar VAM-13 is cataloged as 13 III2 8 – C3b, "Doubled 9, Tripled 0," with population ratings of I-2 R-5. The 2018 revision letter updated the classification details. On the obverse, the 9 is slightly doubled at the bottom right inside of the lower loop, while the right 0 in the date is tripled at the top inside — the more visually dramatic of the two date anomalies. The obverse die marker is a pair of vertical polishing lines visible at the right end of the Phrygian cap ribbon. The reverse die marker comprises diagonal polishing lines on the right side of the wing-neck gap — the open area between the eagle's wing and its neck on the Morgan reverse. A tiny die break above the left wreath was documented but was too small to see with the naked eye and not used as a listing criterion. The 1900-S had a more modest mintage than Philadelphia's production that year, giving the date added collector appeal. Struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint, VAM-13 reflects ongoing VAM system maintenance in which population data and descriptions are updated as new specimens are examined.
