Description

Discovered by Neil Shafer in November 1964, the 1900-P VAM-1 "Normal Die" Morgan dollar establishes the baseline die marriage for the Philadelphia-minted 1900 date — the standard against which all other 1900-P VAM varieties are identified and distinguished. Cataloged as 1 III2 1 - C3a (Normal Die) (189), this variety pairs an Obverse III2 1 — the standard obverse die type for this classification — with a Reverse C3a, the standard reverse die type. Neil Shafer's documentation of this variety in 1964 places it among the earliest VAM identifications, predating the formal publication of the Van Allen-Mallis reference by several years and reflecting the foundational research that would eventually become the comprehensive VAM system. George T. Morgan's design presents Liberty crowned with wheat and cotton on the obverse and a heraldic eagle on the reverse, a configuration that remained unchanged across the Morgan dollar's production span from 1878 through 1921.
