Error
Description
Discovered in 2009 and revised in 2010, this New Orleans Morgan Dollar is designated 1D (revised) III2 1 C3a (Over Buffed Reverse) — named for excessive die polishing that created shadow outlines around design elements. The reverse shows an over-buffed die with shadow outlines around the top of left wreath and In God We Trust, roughness in fields at right of top of left wreath, below the eagle's head, and at edge of eagle's left wing. A small diagonal gouge appears between the eagle's left wing and body about one-third up. Liberty's jaw and chin are doubled, lips slightly tripled. The III O mintmark is set slightly high. Later die states show die clash marks. Attributed by VAMWorld, this variety demonstrates how aggressive die maintenance — polishing intended to extend die life — can itself become a diagnostic feature when taken too far, leaving distinctive surface textures on every coin struck from the affected die. 1900-P VAM-27 2 Olive Reverse, Thread on Wing Discovered by John Baumgart, April 2001..
