1891-P VAM-9C

Description

Discovered by Bill Wolverton in 2020 and classified as III2 9 C3a, this 1891-P Morgan Dollar variety features a doubled ear with die breaks on the left wreath and at UNITE, AMER, and TATE. The obverse shows die polishing lines in RT of LIBERTY. On the reverse, a small die break appears in the left wreath opposite NI of UNITED on later die states, and displaced field die breaks develop at UNITE, AMER, and TATE as the die continues to deteriorate. Displaced field die breaks are fractures that shift slightly from their original position, creating raised areas of displaced metal in the field adjacent to the lettering rather than directly through the letters themselves. The multiple die break locations across three separate segments of the reverse legend indicate a die under severe stress in its later stages, with fractures developing at multiple weak points simultaneously. The "C" suffix on VAM-9 designates a specific die state within the VAM-9 family, tracking progressive deterioration. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver, the 1891-P was produced in the later years of the Morgan Dollar's initial run.
