Description

Pat Mullen's 2010 discovery of the 1891-P VAM-13 Morgan Dollar identified a variety with doubled 1 in the date and comprehensive reverse doubling affecting both the legend lettering and wreath details. The dual-surface doubling — date digits on the obverse and legend with botanical elements on the reverse — suggests these features may originate from the same hub-displacement event if they appear on a single die pair, or from independent anomalies if the dies were produced separately. Catalog notes describe a potential "2 for 1" companion variety: a theoretical counterpart not yet discovered but whose existence is predicted by die-linkage analysis. When this companion is eventually found, it will be supported by the SSDC (Secondary Source Documentation Committee), indicating the research infrastructure is prepared for its documentation. Philadelphia struck 8,694,206 Morgan Dollars in 1891, a lower production year compared to the peak outputs of the 1880s. Mullen's discovery, 119 years after striking, shows how sustained research continues expanding the catalog.
