Description

Produced during the final year of original Morgan Dollar coinage before a nearly three-decade hiatus until 1921, this 1891 Philadelphia Mint variety combines doubled obverse elements with clashed die evidence. Classified as III2 11 - C3c with a rarity of 190, VAM-13A features doubling on the numeral 1 in the date along with doubled reverse legend and wreath elements. The clashed obverse preserves a faint incuse letter n, transferred from the word In on the reverse during a strike without a planchet, visible near Liberty's neck. This ghost impression confirms that the die pair clashed during service, and the surviving trace provides a secondary diagnostic beyond the doubled date numeral. Pat Mullen documented this variety in 2010, adding to the growing catalog of late-date Morgan Dollar varieties. The 1891 Morgan Dollar holds historical significance as the last date before the Bland-Allison Act's successor legislation expired, halting silver dollar production until the Pittman Act authorized resumption in 1921.
