1887-S VAM-20
Error
Description
Discovered in October 2011 by Gary Redfeather (Keil), the 1887-S VAM-20 is classified as III2 14, C3a with a doubled 1 as its principal obverse feature. The 1 in the date is slightly doubled below the upper crossbar, with the date sitting in normal lateral position. Obverse die markers include a polishing line at the top of the I and a die scratch extending from the denticles above the S in PLURIBUS. This variety uses a different die than the 1887-S VAM-18, an important distinction for collectors working through attribution. Research on Heritage Auctions specimens revealed that some examples attributed as VAM-20 lacked the scratch at L but showed the slightest remnant of a gouge above S, while complete virgin examples without any sign of the gouges or scratches were also found. These observations highlight how die marker visibility depends on die state and coin preservation. San Francisco Morgan Dollars from 1887 were struck in notable quantity, and the 1887-S is generally available across grade levels, making it a productive date for variety hunters seeking specific VAM attributions.
