1887-S VAM-12
Error
Description
Marc Serafine discovered this San Francisco Morgan dollar in December 2001, with NicoMarcus providing a revision in 2009. Classified 12 (revised) III2 8 with a C3c reverse, it is designated Doubled 88, Very Near Date, High S. The obverse III2 8 die shows slight doubling on both 8s in the date at the bottom outside of their lower loops near the field. The date sits much further left than normal, earning the very near date classification. Two tiny gouges extend from the denticles above RI in PLURIBUS. Additional examination reveals considerable medium polishing at the end of the cap ribbon. The high S mintmark placement adds another attribution dimension. The combination of leftward date shift and doubled 88 lower loops distinguishes VAM-12 from other 1887-S doubled date varieties, where date position often serves as the first screening criterion. San Francisco Morgan dollars from 1887 represent a moderate mintage year, and the very near date combined with the high mintmark and doubled digits gives VAM-12 a strong set of identifiers for collectors working through the series. =1887-S VAM-12 Doubled 88, Very Near Date, High S= Discovered by Marc Serafine, December 2001.(Revised 2009 by NicoMarcus) 12(revised) III28 ยท C3c (Doubled 88, Very Near Date, High S) (186) Obverse III28โ Both 8's in date have slight doubling at bottom outside of lower loops near field.
