Error
Description
Discovered by John Baumgart in January 2006, the 1887-S Morgan Dollar VAM-14 is classified as III211, C3e (Slanted Date, S/S Bottom), die pair 187. The obverse shows the date slanted in normal lateral position with the 7 sitting higher than the 1, plus a polished curved bar at the top inside of the lower loop of the second 8. The reverse C3e carries a type IV S mint mark that is slightly doubled at the bottom edge of the lower loop, with filled loops indicating die wear or grease fill during striking. The S/S repunched mint mark, where a second S impression is visible at the bottom of the primary mint mark, provides the key reverse diagnostic. Combined with the slanted date on the obverse, where the rightward ascent from 1 to 7 is apparent under moderate magnification, collectors have diagnostics on both sides for attribution of this San Francisco Mint Morgan Dollar die marriage.
