1887-O VAM-2A

Description

Discovered in 2017 by the researcher known as CascadeChris Simpson, the 1887-O VAM-2A Morgan dollar is a Top 100 Morgan VAM, classified III2 2 with a C3a reverse under the designation Doubled 1, Tripled 7, Die Break Stars and AMERICA. The obverse shows a die crack at the right side of stars 1 through 3 and stars 5 through 6, accompanied by a displaced field break — raised metal pushed outward from the crack line. The C3a reverse exhibits a die crack at the top of AMERICA, also with a displaced field break. A cataloging note observes that by modern standards, the die cracks might not warrant separation from the base VAM-2 listing, as they are not particularly significant compared to the primary doubled 1 and tripled 7 diagnostics. Despite this, the Top 100 designation ensures continued collector interest. The 1887-O Morgan was struck at the New Orleans Mint in substantial quantities. Displaced field breaks are visually dramatic because the metal displacement creates a shelf effect adjacent to the crack, making these features more prominent than simple hairline die cracks.
