1887 (O) Morgan Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1887-O WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1887-O Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. The eyelid is doubled to the south, and every star is doubled toward the rim. On the obverse, two L-shaped gouges sit in the hair under LIBERTY's T, and two small gouges at the upper right of the Y run SE. Polish marks show in the low areas of the hair at the back of the head, below the cap. The reverse is pitted on the lower tail feathers and between the tail and the ribbon, most likely from rust on the die. Richard M. Prouty submitted the variety, with photos by Frank M. Zapushek. Its VAM number is 22.
