Description

The 1886-O Morgan Dollar VAM-25, designated Double 86, Double Ear, O Tilted Far Left, was discovered by Bill Wolverton in 2016. The doubling is concentrated on the 8 and 6 of the date and on the ear of Liberty, producing displaced impressions that are visible under moderate magnification. A die chip in the hair immediately to the right of the jaw serves as a reliable die marker for confirmation across die states. The O mintmark is tilted far to the left, a significant orientation anomaly that makes this one of the more visually immediately identifiable 1886-O VAM varieties even before examining the date doubling. The 1886-O Morgan Dollar is a 90% silver coin struck at the New Orleans Mint. New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollars from the 1880s are widely collected and extensively attributed, and the far-left mintmark tilt of VAM-25 provides an accessible first-tier identification feature that can direct attributors toward or away from this variety without requiring high-powered magnification as a first step.
