Description

Identified by Steve Sabella in March 1980, VAM-12 documents a Near Date with Doubled 6 on the 1886-O Morgan Dollar. Plate designation: 12 III2 8 - C3a, plate (181). The obverse displays the numeral 6 doubled at the top inside of the upper loop, where a secondary hub impression left extra thickness visible under moderate magnification. The date is set further left than normal, earning the "Near Date" classification that distinguishes this die from standard 1886-O obverses. New Orleans struck only 10.71 million Morgan Dollars in 1886, a modest output that makes documented varieties from this date-mint more significant. Date position varieties are fundamental to VAM collecting because the date logotype was punched individually into each working die by hand, producing measurable placement differences from die to die. Sabella's discovery during the formative years of VAM research helped establish the catalog framework for 1886-O die pairs. Reverse die C3a. =1886-O VAM-12 Near Date, Doubled 6= Discovered by Steve Sabella, March 1980.
