Error
Description
Discovered by Brian Raines in September 2003, the 1886-O VAM-16A Morgan Dollar carries the classification 16A III21 - C3g from die pair 181. This New Orleans mint regular strike combines a repunched mintmark (O/O Right) with a clashed obverse bearing transferred reverse inscriptions. The obverse clash left a tiny incuse tick of the "n" from "In" next to Liberty's neck, along with partial incuse letters "st" from "Trust" visible in the right hair vee of the lower hair edges. Paired with reverse die C3g, this variety offers dual attribution points — the repunched O mintmark shifted to the right and the clashed letter fragments embedded in Liberty's portrait. The 1886-O date is already scarce in higher grades, making well-attributed VAM varieties from this mintage particularly sought after. Die pair 181 produced several recognized varieties, situating the VAM-16A within a broader family of related New Orleans die marriages.
