Description

Pete Hohnstein discovered the 1884 Philadelphia Morgan dollar VAM-19A in June 2009, classifying it as III2 18 with a C3a reverse under the designation Doubled Ear, Far Date, Clashed Obverse n and st. The obverse is a clashed die displaying a faint incuse n from the reverse word IN next to Liberty's neck and a partial incuse st from TRUST showing in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. The far date position completes the obverse diagnostics. The same pair of dies produced both VAM-19 and VAM-19A, with the A suffix indicating a later die state or additional diagnostic that warranted separation. Collectors should consult VAM-19 for supplementary attribution photos since the shared die pairing means obverse and reverse features overlap substantially between the two listings. Die clashes transfer reverse legend elements as incuse mirror-image impressions onto the obverse, and the n-and-st combination represents a moderately strong clash event. The 1884 Philadelphia Morgan is widely available, but the convergence of ear doubling, far date, and dual clash transfers rewards careful examination under magnification.
