1859 Indian Head Cent Repunched Date, Pre-Cud FS-302 Snow-2

Description

A repunched date is visible on this 1859 Indian Head cent. A repunched date occurs when one or more digits of the date are punched into the die more than once in slightly different positions, leaving traces of the earlier punching visible on struck coins. In this case, the digits are repunched below the date, particularly visible inside the 8 and below the top bar of the 5. This variety is cataloged as FS-302 and Snow-2. The 1859 Indian Head cent is the first year of the series and features the unique Laurel Wreath reverse design, used only in this inaugural year before being replaced by the Oak Wreath with Shield reverse in 1860. This variety also has a precud die crack on the reverse from inside 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock.
