Description

VAM-1I of the 1883-O Morgan Dollar represents one of the numerous sub-varieties within the VAM-1 normal die family for this prolific New Orleans Mint issue. The Van Allen-Mallis attribution system assigns letter suffixes to distinguish minor die variations — such as die cracks, polishing differences, and progressive die deterioration stages — that share the same fundamental die characteristics as the baseline VAM-1 but exhibit unique secondary features that identify specific working dies or die states within the production run. The 1883-O is among the most commonly encountered Morgan Dollar date-mint combinations, with the New Orleans Mint producing substantial quantities that year as part of the massive silver dollar coinage mandated by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878 and continued under the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. George T. Morgan's design features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton on the obverse, with a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch surrounded by a wreath on the reverse. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the coin weighs 26.73 grams with a diameter of 38.1 mm and carries a reeded edge. The sheer volume of 1883-O production meant dozens of obverse and reverse die pairs were employed throughout the year, and the VAM-1 sub-variety series documents the individual characteristics of these numerous normal dies. Collectors pursuing VAM completeness for the 1883-O date track each lettered sub-variety as a distinct die marriage, building a detailed census of the New Orleans Mint's production sequence for the year.
