Description

Discovered in August 2020 by N. Marcus (known as unc90o), this San Francisco Mint 1882 Morgan Dollar is cataloged as VAM-40 with die pair III2 25 and reverse C3a. The obverse displays comprehensive date doubling: the 1 is doubled below the upper crossbar; the left 8 shows doubling at the left outside and right inside of the upper loop plus the right outside of the lower loop; the right 8 is doubled at the left outside of both loops and slightly at the right outside of the lower loop; and the 2 is doubled at the left outside of the upper loop with slight doubling at the bottom left and right outside. Die polishing lines in the ERT of LIBERTY serve as an obverse die marker. The reverse features a large die chip on later die states appearing on the left wreath leaves opposite NI of UNITED, providing a dramatic secondary diagnostic that increases in prominence as the die deteriorates. The August 2020 discovery date makes this a relatively recent addition to the VAMWorld catalog, demonstrating that new doubled date varieties continue to surface on well-studied San Francisco Morgan Dollars nearly 140 years after they were struck.
