Error
Description
Discovered by Pete Warren in October 1974 and classified as 10 III2 9 C3a, this 1882-S Morgan Dollar variety features doubled 1-82 in the date. The numeral 1 is doubled on the top right side of the shaft, and the first 8 has a die chip at the top inside of the upper loop and at the bottom inside of the lower loop, with polishing marks and a small mark on the left outside of the upper loop. The second 8 and the 2 are doubled slightly on the right outside of the upper loop. The reverse shows a mintmark that is centered and upright. Pete Warren's 1974 discovery places this among the earlier documented San Francisco Morgan Dollar varieties, predating the explosion of VAM research that occurred in the 1980s and 1990s. The doubling across four date digits — 1, both 8s, and the 2 — offers multiple attribution points, though the die chips on the first 8 may be the most immediately visible diagnostic feature. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver composition.
