1882-P VAM-8

Description

Discovered by Tom DeLorey in March 1974, the 1882-P VAM-8 is classified III2 8 · C3a and named for its strongly doubled 2. On the obverse die III2 8, the upper digit 2 is doubled prominently at the top inside of the upper loop — a feature so pronounced that on higher-grade examples the doubling may appear tripled. The reverse employs the standard C3a die with no significant abnormalities. Despite the strength of the obverse doubling, the 1882-P VAM-8 has proven to be an exceptionally elusive variety to locate in commerce. Roughly two-thirds of known examples exist in high grade, yet the coin turns up in circulated through AU condition as well, suggesting it was not hoarded in quantity. The 1882 Philadelphia Morgan dollar carries no mint mark, struck in 90% silver, and had a generous mintage — but the VAM-8 obverse die pair appears to have produced relatively few survivors. Collectors seeking this variety are advised that the strong loop doubling on the 2 is the primary diagnostic and should be visible even through moderate wear, making it a realistic cherrypick on circulated examples.
